Games Hungarians Play...

Well that was a very long and very wet week just gone. Can't remember it raining so heavily or for so long here without a break.
But it looks like we have a breather from the rain today, thankfully.

Went to Budapest last Monday to meet up with a friend coming from Venice early on Tuesday morning. Had a very wet, but lovely time as always in Budapest.
My friend is staying about 2 weeks before moving on to Lyon in France.

We caught the train back, arriving at the change over station at 7pm when we found out there was no connecting train to Tiszafured until 9pm...arriving 9.30 pm. No big drama except there are no buses or taxis available after 8pm in Tiszafured!

Soooo, we hired a taxi to go the 50 or so klm to my place, while one was still available.
16,000ft later ($80.00)we arrived home nice and safe and warm as toast.

It was good actually, as I now know what trains NOT to catch after 2pm, plus it is good to know, if stuck, one can get a cab home if necessary. So all in all, it was a good outcome.

We haven't done much as it's been raining all week, so no touring around yet, just catching up on chatting in English and a bit of rest too as the guys haven't been able to work in the rain either.

Imre took down one of the chimneys just before it began raining last week, as it was on a very bad lean. He can't fix that back yet or paint the exterior of the house in the wet, so it has really been a nice rest for me too.

Melinda and I did some painting ourselves today and wow! The door and architraves we did, look awesome, even with just the undercoat. Very schmick indeed.

Here are some of the games from last week at the local Harvest festival...
Mouse and cheese game...Try and feed the mouse at the top hole near the yellow cheese without allowing the cheese in the hoop with the ball (cheese) in it to fall into any of the holes on the way up to the top hole. A great game..
Think this one is easy? Not so!
Try to push your opponent off the plank...
It's hard to even stand up, because the plank is very slippery!
The best merry-go-round ever!
Man powered. They just turn the handles in the middle and the thing goes really fast too!
Fishing game...
Try walking in these old fashioned shoes... Logs of wood with  a leather strap. Really hard to manage at first as the wood does not bend.
Throw the ball in the clown mouth...plus a 9 pin toss game behind ...
Little throw downs that have a really loud bang...
A great game to strengthen your arms! A take on the greasy pole game...
You have to pull yourself along the pole, while riding the horse/barrel!
A take on "hit the pinata"...There's walking skis and the stilts in the background on the grass too...
This one was good. You had to keep adding stones from the bucket and not tip any off...
Ten pin bowling Hungarian style!
Standing them all up again...
Noughts and crosses...
Sword and shield games...
She's trouncing him...
Winner...
The best game ever...Have never seen it before but it is a cross between checkers, chess and something else. Mind bending, but simple as...but it has your brain running both ways. Awesome.
Amazing...
The board and chips.
This was a good memory game. All the backs were question marks and the fronts were different images. The aim was to look at the images and select 3 or more images, go to the back and turn the question mark around to see if you could remember where your chosen images were.
This was the stones game...The boy is trying to add the last of the stones from the bucket to win his game without the board over balancing.
My effort at the tenpins game!
A close up of the mouse and cheese game.
Another winter's night game of balancing the sticks...
You keep pulling one piece out and adding it to the top...
Ooops...about to collapse!
This one was funny to watch as the hammer heads were hollow pipes!
The race was on...
A great fun game too...
The girls eventually got really good at it.
The rag bag game. Pieces of material connected to a few rods plus an old sock filled with sand and you toss between 2 players.
Quite fun actually...
At least I tried it...
OOPS!
Ye old ball bearing game!
Try and slip the ring over the rod...hahaha, good luck!
A bit of a change now...Budapest cakes...yum yum yum!
A healthy option actually!
Oh dear...look at the lean on the chimney! I never knew it was on a lean, let alone a disaster ahead type lean,  until I visited my neighbour and looked at the chimney from her place! Wow, that was lucky. Imre pulled it down immediately and has to build a platform up there first to rebuild the chimney! Da dum, da-dum. And on it goes!
A lovely gift of a tin of Dutch chocky biscuits from an equally lovely Dutch friend.
Well, that's a quick cover of the fabulous games that Hungarians play.
All the games are hand made by the people in the pics and all are made from wood.
Beautiful work indeed.

Will post Budapest pics in a few days time.

My leg is healing well and the scab is almost gone and all is looking good thus far. Am well and very busy.
Had a few friends around on 2 nights this week for Aussie type drinkies and nibblies. Hard to really get it right though as everything is different here...e.g. there are no Jatz crackers etc etc...but we made do and it was fun.

The peaches are finally all done, the fridge is full of stewed peaches, peach puree, peach cake, peach, coconut and raisin mash and plain stewed full peaches, still with the stones in them.
The tomatoes took on a second life and have gone crazy again bearing so many more tomatoes, it is amazing.
Next month is the time to plant all the fruit and other trees for next year, so have marked out and put stakes around the paddock to get the 30 or so holes dug in time this year. I missed that window of time last year, so hopefully all the trees I want will be available when I want them in Oct.

A few more of the 31 windows have been painted and at long last Imre fixed all the broken window panes on Wednesday, so now there are no more wind tunnels for the cold winds to blow through the house in winter! Amazing.

The place is coming along fast now, as everything that gets done is very noticeable. It is looking good and Peter, you would not recognise it at all, I'm sure.

Honeymoon Cottage Update...
Nothing going on there the past week, due to the rain.
Am hoping to have the house chimney fixed, house exterior and windows all painted by end September-ish- so we can start the roof of the Cottage ASAP to seal it up for winter.

All else is good here and I'm well, so for now it's cheers and love to all,
Take care,
Lots of love,
Mary
