Wow, I raced in to grab my camera this morning at 8am to take a pic of the wall coming down, but the guys gave it a little shove and it was gone in a flash...so I missed it.
They didn't think it would be a one handed job...they just pushed on it to see how hard it would be to get rid of and it went down in one little test push... much to their amazement!
Then the truck came with the new kitchen window, more blocks for the rebuilds of the 3 sheds, a load of gravel and bags of cement.
So I'm set for a week or so...
Then next week I have to get 5 more pallets of bricks...(or however many they are allowed to carry on one load) and begin stockpiling a few more pallets each week for April and May's jobs.
After the wall came down it was easier to measure things. At least it's high enough for me!. I can't even touch the ceiling. |
Having a battle with the wire netting and old wood that was pretending to be a fence... |
Ahhh, got it! |
All gone, now Zoltan can get the rest of the stumps out... |
That was a fence...hahaha...held together for how many years with bits of string and wire. |
This is the reason this back wall has to come down too...no footings at all. Just mud bricks on the dirt... |
You can see where the dirt line was...we dug down and leveled everything and found this! Amazing it stood so strong for so long! |
Spring has sprung and the grass is growing fast. The boys are coming on Wednesday next to cut it and will turn up once a week for 2 hours and mow everything that moves! |
I went up to visit a friend who is German, to have her help me organise the mowing boys and a lady to do sewing for me. I want someone to sew curtains, cushions and bedspreads. She speaks English, German and Hungarian. |
There is a lovely park here. Will get some pics as soon as the trees bloom. |
The playgrounds... |
I came back 2 hrs later and Zoltan had finished digging out 3 massive, old stumps where I'm standing, around the gate area. |
He had to make a temporary fence for a month to keep dog in. As soon as the shed is repaired, a new fence and gate goes up. |
8am this morning, Friday 18th March...and I missed it coming down. It was so fast the guys said, they didn't think it would fall so easily with one half hearted test push! |
Wow, look at how thick those walls are! This was a chook pen. There are 3 rooms like this, so we'll take out the 2 dividing walls and make one long workshop area. |
Off to get the surrounds of the little shed cleared away for next weeks job of fixing this one up. It only needs a new back in it. |
Almost done. The roof comes off on Thursday, the insides gets cleared of all the old corn husks and next day the rebuild starts, roof goes on next day and the floor goes in the day after! That's it. Simple. Then I'll paint it with whitewash again and it will look 100 years old, but clean and schmik! |
Back to the shed and the rubble pile is half gone already. |
Testing for height...We are not going to take out the ceiling now, just clean up the floor area and dig down a few more inches and pour about 4-6 inches of concrete for a floor. Will take out the 2 dividing walls and make one long workshop area. |
The ceiling height is OK for me...so I'll just have to find a vertically impaired caretaker ...that's all. |
The door hole you can see on the left will be enlarged to take a door and Zoltan said this corner where the crack is should come down too. It will be easier to put the door in that way and strengthen the wall where it will join the new building when it gets done, hopefully on schedule in July/Aug/Sept this year. Everything else has to be completed before the big room gets started. |
...and the pile grows higher and bigger...Just had a brainwave when standing there today. Instead of getting the truck in to move all the stuff to the dump later in the year...why not make a deck up there and pop the spa on it?.I could use all the big windows Sabina gave me to semi-enclose it...the guys could pour a stack of concrete over it all...Hmmmnnn, sounding better by the moment. |
Then in the middle of all this activity, the delivery truck came with all the goodies for this week. |
That will be enough gravel for the 3 floors in the little shed, the 3 door shed and the summer kitchen...hopefully! |
The last shovel fulls of rubble and it's just on mid day... |
Lookin' good guys! |
That's it! All done. So, now begins the next round of jobs. |
From this to the above in a week...Awesome job Zoltan, with a final hand from Istvan this morning for 4 hrs. |
The little shed gets its makeover on Thursday, Friday and Saturday next week. Then it's Easter...most shops don't close here on Friday, but Sunday is sacred. So, hopefully all will be done on the little shed before Easter Sunday.
After Easter, on Tuesday 29th we move to the back of the house and cut in the 2 last windows in bed room one and the kitchen. It will make such a difference to have windows on that side of the house, especially in the kitchen.
That should take about 5-6 days to cut the holes, fix the windows in and cement around them both, taking us up to the first weekend in April when my USA carpenter volunteer comes for about 2 weeks.
Will get him to rub back the windows and doors timbers in the house and undercoat them, fix up the wine barrels, all 5 of them...I found another one outside I'd forgotten about. It's still in one piece...but only just.
If he can reassemble them all, straighten them out and strengthen them, others can rub them back and stain them or whatever one does with whole barrels! I'll get him to complete the coffee table vat one though, as that is something a carpenter must do, as Zoltan or I can't saw a straight line!
Well that takes me out for this eventful week.
Got a whole lot done and while it may not seem much, the place looks so much tidier now...to me!
See you next time,
Cheers,
M
xx
