While Dujohn, my Work-away volunteer was here, he did a big day trip up to Eger and next day we went for a lovely day trip around some of the towns in the area.
We went out to Dirks' home in Egyek first where I caught up with Dog...
She remembered me and kept on wrapping her leg arms around my legs and holding on...then trying to smooch me...so funny!
I do miss her company, but it was too much stress every time I had to leave here to find baby/dog sitters for the dog all the time.
Then, after checking out Dirk's 6 dogs, including Dog, his turtles and fish tanks, we went for a walk around town of Egyek. Population about 5,000 people. It even has a few bumps in it...normally called hills!
Everywhere here is soooo flat, a little hill seems like a mountain!

Wooden statues in Egyek Park... |
Pretty and well kept gardens at the Church... |
A pretty coloured rose... |
Another typical village church... |
More lovely hand carved statues... |
Waiting for the hoped for rain...but it did not eventuate! |
A really pretty restaurant exterior in Egyek... |
Pulled up down a little lane and nearly tumbled into the river! |
Andrea's little car enjoying a nice joy ride... |
Quite a shock to see 3 dead fish floating around here...one just drifted under the bushes. |
A nice cool jungle walk! |
Meet the biggest tree in the area... |
Dujon trying to squeeze into the hole in the centre of the tree... |
Heading through the bush, via short cut, to the ferry wharf... |
We had to yell out and signal the guys on the other side to crank up the ferry and come get us! |
It is a paddle wheel ferry. Awesome. |
Coming into "port" for us... |
Flaps down, ready to fire up the car and board the ferry... |
All aboard...150ft each and 300ft for the car. 750 ft...that is about $3.50 all up, for 3 people and a car. Bargain. |
This was an amazing crossing. Loved it. Pity it was so short... |
Where we left from... |
The chain is guiding the ferry along a wire under the water. Careful when driving your boat along here when the ferry is crossing. |
So pretty, cool, quaint and did the job in an antique way... |
Danger...danger...Crocs floating by...look out! |
The distant shore is not too far away now...the big green roof is a beer tent...but it was not open on this Wednesday... |
Right out in the middle of nowhere, no sign posts, no tourist info...Only seemingly known to locals... |
Another of the 17 towns in the area starting with the prefix "TISZA" |
The pretty gardens in the middle of nowhere ferry park stop! |
We took a back road about 20klms away and found "Little House on the Prairie". a real house, front verandah and all! |
A few more klms away we found a nice tourist hotel...with a duck and goat farm at this back entrance. |
Cute goats...nice and fat. I'm wondering if they are on the menu, if they are only to keep the place eaten down or just for fun??? |
A cute little lagoon wandering through the landscape etc etc... |
The side of the hotel entrance... |
The real entrance road to the hotel... |
A pigeon penthouse! |
A nice kids play swing and climbing rope ladder... |
Ginormous hibiscus flowers... |
Amazing size of these flowers... |
Rows and rows of picnic tables...Not a body in them...too hot outside to-day. |
Inside the hotel foyer... |
Someone been hunting? |
A really nice open wood fireplace... |
Green is the colour for the day...Wednesday in Hungarian(szerda...(zerda)) is pronounced almost the same as Green...(zold, but said...zurd)...Fitting for the green stuff on the water here. |
Found a great icecream shop in the next town...Poroslo...and had a double helping of dark choc ice cream...twice! The big fan you can barely see on the right top, is spraying out 5 jets of water spray...Lovely and cooling. I really like the energy in this town. It is the first time in Hungary I have felt such energy, apart from Budapest, which has a different pulse. This town def. had an entrepreneurial vibe for sure...at least this corner of it did. I felt it intensely and my mind became very alert. Interesting indeed. The train stops here on the way to Budapest, so I'm thinking I could just jump on the train, take a quick trip up, only 7 mins away by train, have a few scoops of that choc icecream, sit and ponder a while, then come home again, seeing as I can't drive at the moment with my ear/balance challenge. |
Not my ice cream, but if it was the dark chocolate, I'd be sitting in it, I can assure you, consuming the liquid lusciousness as fast as it melted, for sure! |
Well, that was our little jaunt around some of the local area. We are sorting out day trips for the guests next year...finally, so am testing times, available attractions and so on!
The mez floor has started on the cottage now and both guys will be working on Monday to get the main beam that Imre already put up, locked down and the floor bearers placed onto the walls around.
Then they'll build the 2 end gables of brick, put in the windows and then the roof can go on.
By that time, hopefully Dirk will have completed cleaning all the roof tiles that can be re-used.
It seems there will be 4 layers on the roof...the inside visible layer, the waterproof layer, insulation, battens then the tiles. Not sure how they do the waterproofing layer yet, either last before the battens or ???
I spent an entire day from 7am to about 5pm on Thursday finalising the top part layout of the 2 brick and rubble seats on the big deck. They are looking great and I hope to work out how to create the seating areas on them to suit.
Was going to use left over flat bricks for the actual part you sit down on, but am not sure if there will be enough bricks now! hahaha...Too funny! I create an idea for something to use up all the left over rubbish, rubble and junk...in lieu of getting a dump truck to take it all away...and maybe I'll run out of rubbish before it's all completed!!!
Anyways...the bricks are of all shapes and sizes and I'd bet you real dollars that no two bricks out of the entire hundreds I've used, are the same size! Some are bent, bowed and obviously, a lot are broken, over half have corners missing, some are really thin, others really fat and so on.
If it looks too wonky when completed, I'll just get Imre to render the bigger areas on them and they will then take on an entirely different look and feel....They'll look a lot more formal...not too sure if that will suit the mood I'm trying to create, or will I wait and see when the plants grow and flow over them, if they'll look great...but we'll see!
The rustic garden edges are looking good, so on the weekend will plant something in the 3 gardens that are now weed free.
The hibiscus that Margit gave me a few weeks ago are coming on great now too...much to my amazement. I really thought the heatwaves of the past 2 weeks would have taken them all out as every leaf on them all were cooked to a frazzle...but every single one of them now have heaps of new shoots and I will only have to ask Margit for another 4 to complete the back of the deck hedge.
Am trying to complete the entire big deck, minus the pavilion, by the end of August, as hopefully the weather will cool down a bit to allow this.
The days are getting noticeably shorter by the day now...the sun is moving around to its winter position so fast, it is unbelievable. Lots of sun coming into the house now, with all the new windows as the sun goes lower in the sky.
I'm really blessed with the house position as the sun goes from east to west, in an arc, right over the top of the house in the 3 months of high summer and for the rest of the year, it streams into every room in the house now. So bright and light.
That was a nice trip we did last week and I loved the paddle wheel ferry! I hope some day, someone can come and do the same trip with me again, it was really very pretty.
OK...am off to do some work now, so hope you all are well and happy.
See you next week with more on the Hungarian Happenings!
Cheers and love to all,
M
